Queen Jecoliah, from Jerusalem, was the wife of King Amaziah (r. 796-767 BC), and mother of King Azariah of Judah (r. 792-740 BC).
Her husband, Amaziah, was executed like his father before him, King Joash (r. 835-796 BC).
King Joash was the son of King Ahaziah (r. 841 BC) and Queen Zibiah. Joash began to rule over Judah in the seventh year of King Jehu’s reign in Israel.
King Joash’s officers plotted against him and assassinated him at Beth-millo on the road to Silla. The assassins were Jozacar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer—both trusted advisers.
King Ahaziah, son of Queen Athaliah (r. 841-835 BC) and King Jehoram (853-841 BC), was the first King of Judah to be descended from both the House of David and the House of Omri, through his mother and successor.
When Athaliah, learned that her son, Ahaziah and her brother King Joram of Israel, were dead (killed by Jehu), she began to destroy the rest of the royal family.
Queen Athaliah, was the daughter of King Ahab & Queen Jezebel. She was the only female monarch to sit on King David’s throne in history.
When Queen Jecoliah’s husband, Amaziah, was well established as king, he executed the officials who had assassinated King Joash.
There was a conspiracy against Amaziah’s life in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But his enemies sent assassins after him, and they killed him there. They brought his body back to Jerusalem on a horse, and he was buried with his ancestors in the City of David.
Their son, King Azariah (r. 792-740 BC), began to rule over Judah in the twenty-seventh year of the reign of King Jeroboam II of Israel. He reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years.
Centuries later, Jesus would be crucified in Jerusalem, her hometown (c. 33 AD).
