Queen Jedidah: Wife of King Amon and Mother of Josiah

Queen Jedidah was the wife of King Amon (r. 642-640 BC), and mother of King Josiah of Judah (r. 640-609 BC).

She was the daughter of Adaiah from Bozkath.

Queen Jedidah’s husband, Amon, was the son of King Manasseh of Judah (r. 697-642 BC) and Queen Meshullemeth.

King Amon reigned for two years before being assassinated by his officials.

Their son, Josiah, died in the Battle at Megiddo (c. 609 BC).

When Pharaoh Necho II (r. 610–595 BC) of Egypt led his army to Carchemish to join the Assyrian Empire in fighting against the Babylonian Empire… king Josiah refused to let the them pass.

The Battle at Megiddo resulted in Josiah's death and the Kingdom of Judah becoming a vassal state of Egypt.

The people of Judah took Josiah’s son, Jehoahaz (r. 609 BC), and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.

When Necho II, son of Pharaoh Psamtik I (r. 664-610 BC), heard that the people of Judah had crowned Jehoahaz king, he took him as a prisoner to Egypt for the rest of his life.

Necho II made Eliakim, a brother of Jehoahaz, king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim (r. 609-598 BC).

After three years, Jehoiakim rebelled and lost his life in 598 BC. His son, Jehoiachin (r. 597 BC), became the next king of Judah.

King Nebuchadnezzar II (r. 605-562 BC), son of Nabopolassar (r. 626-605 BC) and Shuadamqa, of Babylon deposed Jehoiakim’s successor, King Jehoiachin, and installed Jehoiachin’s uncle Mattaniah, changing his name to Zedekiah (r. 597-586 BC).

After 37 years in prison, Jehoiachin was released by King Amel-Marduk (r. 562-560 BC), son of Nebuchadnezzar II.

Josiah is remembered for abolishing idol worship.

Josiah’s death marked the beginning of the end for the Kingdom of Judah, which would fall to Babylon in 586 BC.

Queen Jedidah was the grandmother of Jehoahaz, Eliakim (Jehoiakim), and Mattaniah (Zedekiah).

Centuries later, Jesus would be crucified in Jerusalem (c. 33 AD).
