Queen Zebidah: Wife of King Josiah and Mother of Jehoakim

Queen Zebidah was the wife of King Josiah (r. 640-609 BC), and mother of King Jehoakim of Judah.

She was the daughter of Pedaiah from Rumah.

Queen Zebidah’s husband, Josiah, was the son of King Amon of Judah (r. 642-640 BC) and Queen Jedidah.

Josiah was the father of Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim (Eliakim), and Zedekiah.

Jehoahaz and Zedekiah’s mother was Queen Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah.

King Josiah died in the Battle at Megiddo (c. 609 BC), leading the Kingdom of Judah to become a vassal state of Egypt.

Pharaoh Necho II, son of Psamtik I (r. 664-610 BC), heard that the people of Judah had crowned Jehoahaz king, he took him as a prisoner to Egypt for the rest of his life.

Necho II made Eliakim, brother of Jehoahaz, king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim (r. 609-598 BC).

After three years, Jehoiakim rebelled and lost his life in 598 BC. His son, Jehoiachin (r. 597 BC), became the next king of Judah.

King Nebuchadnezzar II (r. 605-562 BC), son of Nabopolassar (r. 626-605 BC) and Shuadamqa of Babylon, deposed King Jehoiachin, and installed Jehoiachin’s uncle Mattaniah, changing his name to Zedekiah (r. 597-586 BC).

After 37 years in prison, Jehoiachin was released by King Amel-Marduk (r. 562-560 BC), son of Nebuchadnezzar II.

The Kingdom of Judah was defeated by the Babylonians in 586 BC and carried into captivity during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II, son of Nabopolassar.

The Kingdom of Israel had been defeated by the Assyrians in 722 BC during the reign of King Sargon II, son of Tiglath-Pileser III.

King Cyaxares of Media died the year following Judah’s defeat, and was succeeded by his son, Astyages (r. 585-550 BC).

Astyages was the father of Queen Mandane of Media, mother of King Cyrus the Great (r. 559-530 BC).

Astyages was then succeeded by his grandson, Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire (r. 550-330 BC).

Cyaxares’ daughter, Amytis, was the wife of Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II (r. 605-572 BC)... the reigning king of Babylonia when the Kingdom of Judah was defeated.

Assyria had been conquered (c. 612 BC) at the hands of the Babylonians and Medes during the reign of King Sin-shar-ishkun (r. 623-612 BC), son of Ashurbanipal.

Nebuchadnezzar II was succeeded in Babylonia by Amel-Marduk (r. 562-560 BC), who was then succeeded by Neriglissar (r. 560-556 BC).

Centuries later, Jesus would be crucified in Jerusalem (c. 33 AD).
