Queens & Consorts of 18th Dynasty Egypt: Nefertari, Iaret, Mutemwiya, wives of Thutmose IV (r. 1397-1388 BC)

Nefertari was the first Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Thutmose IV (r. 1397-1388 BC). While her background is unknown, she was likely of Egyptian birth.

Iaret, also a Great Royal Wife, was the daughter of Amenhotep II (r. 1427-1397 BC).

Iaret’s siblings were Amenhotep III (pharaoh), Amenemhat (prince), Amenemopet (princess), Petepihu (princess), Tentamun (princess), and possibly Siatum (prince).

Iaret’s father, Amenhotep II, was the son of Thutmose III and Merytre-Hatshepsut

Iaret’s paternal grandfather, Thutmose III (r. 1479-1425 BC), was the sixth pharaoh of 18th Dynasty Egypt.

Mutemwiya was a daughter of King Artatama I of Mitanni (c. 1420 BC).

Mutemwiya’s brother was Shuttarna II (c. 1400-1380 BC).

Their father, King Artatama I, was the son of King Shaushtatar of Mitanni, who ruled parts of northern Mesopotamia and Syria.

Mutemwiya was the mother of Pharaoh Amenhotep III (r. 1388-1351 BC).

Her daughter-in-law, Queen Tiye, mother of Pharaoh Akhenaten (r. 1351-1334 BC), is regarded as one of the most influential queens ever to rule Egypt (Kemet). Tiye was a daughter of Yuya, king’s Lieutenant to Amenhotep III, and his wife, Thuya

Nefertari, Iaret, and Mutemwiya’s husband, Pharaoh Thutmose IV, was the son of Pharaoh Amenhotep II and Queen Tiaa.

Thutmose IV restored iconic monuments like the Great Sphinx, legitimized his rule through the Dream Stela, and created the stability that enabled Amenhotep III’s reign

Thutmose IV was succeeded by Amenhotep III (r. 1388-1351 BC), who was then succeeded by Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten (r. 1351-1334 BC).
