Queen Hephzibah was the wife of King Hezekiah (r. 728-686 BC), and mother of King Manasseh of Judah (r. 697-642 BC).
Queen Hephzibah’s husband, Hezekiah, was the son of King Ahaz of Judah (r. 743-715 BC).
King Hezekiah ruled over Judah from Jerusalem for twenty-nine years. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and refused to pay him tribute.
King Sennacherib began to rule Assyria in 704 BC. His father, Sargon II (r. 721-705 BC), was the son and successor of Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III (r. 744-727 BC).
King Sennacherib laid siege to the fortified towns of Judah, giving orders for his army to break through their walls.
Hezekiah consulted with his officials and military advisers, and they decided to stop the flow of the springs outside the city. They organized a huge work crew to stop the flow of the springs, cutting off the brook that ran through the fields. For they said, “Why should the kings of Assyria come here and find plenty of water?”
The siege was unsuccessful.
When King Hezekiah died, their son, Manasseh (r. 697-642 BC) succeeded him as king.
Assyrian records list Manasseh among twenty-two kings required to provide materials for Assyrian king Esarhaddon's building projects. Esarhaddon (r. 680-669 BC) was succeeded by his son, Ashurbanipal (r. 668-626 BC), who also names Manasseh as one of a number of vassals who assisted his campaign against Egypt.
When Queen Hephzibah’s son, Manasseh died, her grandson Amon (r. 642-640 BC) succeeded him as king.
Centuries later, Jesus would be crucified in Jerusalem (c. 33 AD).
