Queens & Consorts of 19th Dynasty Egypt: Sitre, Wife of Ramesses I (c. 1292-1290 BC)

Queen Sitre became the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Ramesses I (c. 1292-1290 BC) when he became pharaoh. Before that, he’d been a military officer and high official under Pharaoh Horemheb (c. 1319-1292 BC). Her lineage is unknown.

Horemheb, the last pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty Egypt, had no surviving heir and appointed Ramesses I, then called Paramessu, as his successor.

Sitre was the mother of Pharaoh Seti I and grandmother of Ramesses II.

Her husband, Ramesses I, son of Seti, was the founding pharaoh of Egypt's 19th Dynasty. His family rose through the Egyptian military elite.

The First Intermediate Period (c. 2181-2055 BC) was Egypt’s political collapse. Dynasties 7 through 10 marked the end of a strong centralized government and marked Egypt’s shift to regional power struggles until Theban kings consolidated Upper Egypt and reunified the country under Mentuhotep II (c. 2040-2009 BC), becoming the first pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055-1650 BC).

It comprises the Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, and part of the Eleventh Dynasties. Egypt was divided between two competing power bases. One of the bases was at Heracleopolis in Lower Egypt, and the other was at Thebes, in Upper Egypt.

The Second Intermediate Period (c. 1782 to 1550 BC) marks a period when ancient Egypt was divided into smaller dynasties for a second time, between the end of the Middle Kingdom and the start of the New Kingdom (c. 1570-1069 BC).

Egypt’s third Intermediate Period (c. 1077-664 BC) began with the death of Pharaoh Ramesses XI (r. 1106-1077 BC) which ended the New Kingdom.

The Ramesside Dynasty shaped Egypt’s during the New Kingdom, especially under Seti I (c. 1290-1279, BC) and Ramesses II (c. 1279-1213 BC).

Ramesses I was succeeded by Seti I (c. 1290-1279, BC), who was then succeeded by Ramesses II (c. 1279-1213 BC).
