Queens & Consorts of 18th Dynasty Egypt: Tiye, Gilukhepa, Tadukhepa, Sitamun, Iset, Wives of Amenhotep III (r. 1388-1351 BC)

Tiye, one of the most powerful and influential queens of Ancient Egypt, was the daughter of Yuya and Thuya.

Tiye’s siblings were Anen, and possibly Pharaoh Ay (c. 1323-1319 BC)

Tiye’s father, Yuya, was king’s Lieutenant to Amenhotep III (r. 1388-1351 BC).

Tiye’s mother, Thuya, was the great grandmother of Pharaoh Tutankhamun (r. 1333-1323 BC) and is believed to be a descendant of Queen Ahmose-Nefertari.

Tiye was the mother of Sitamun, Iset, Henuttaneb, Nebetah, Thutmose, Akhenaten, “The Younger Lady,” and Beketaten.

Amenhotep III’s wife, Gilukhepa, was the daughter of King Shuttarna II of Mitanni. Their marriage was part of a diplomatic alliance between Egypt and Mitanni.

Gilukhepa’s siblings were Tushratta, Biria-Waza, and Artashumara.

Gilukhepa’s father, Shuttarna II (c. 1380 BC), was the son of Artatama I.

Gilukhepa’s paternal grandfather, Artatama I (c. 1420 BC), was the son of King Shaushtatar of Mitanni, who ruled parts of northern Mesopotamia and Syria.

Tadukhepa became Amenhotep III’s wife approximately Year 36 of his reign. She was the daughter of Tushratta and Juni.

Tadukhepa’s brother was Shattiwaza (c. 1330-1305 BC) of Mitanni. Following the assassination of their father, Shattiwaza escaped and sought refuge with the Hittite king Suppiluliuma I (c. 1350 BC-1322 BC). He married Muwatti, daughter of King Suppiluliuma I, and returned to Mitanni with a Hittite army. Shattiwaza defeated Shuttarna III (c. 1345 BC) who had usurped the throne, and was crowned king.

Tadukhepa’s father, Tushratta (c. 1358-1335 BC), was the son of Shuttarna II.

Not much is known about her mother, Juni.

Tadukhepa’s maternal grandfather, Shuttarna II (c. 1400-1380 BC), was the son of Artatama I and brother of Thutmose IV’s wife, Mutemwiya.

Sitamun and Iset were daughters of Queen Tiye and Pharaoh Amenhotep III. Both became his wives.

Amenhotep III was the ninth pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty Egypt. He was the son of Mutemwiya and Thutmose IV (r. 1397-1388 BC).

Mount Seir is the ancient and biblical name for a mountainous region stretching between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba in the northwestern region of Edom and southeast of the Kingdom of Judah. It may also have marked the older historical limit of Ancient Egypt in Canaan. A place called "Seir, in the land of Shasu", thought to be near Petra, Jordan, is listed in the temple of Amenhotep III at Soleb (c. 1380 BC).

Amenhotep III was succeeded by his son Amenhotep IV, who later changed his name to Akhenaten (r. 1351-1334 BC). Akhenaten was then succeeded by Smenkhkare (r. 1335-1334 BC).
