Queens & Consorts of 18th Dynasty Egypt: Hatshepsut and Iset, wives of Thutmose II (r. 1493-1479 BC)

Queen and Pharaoh Hatshepsut (r. 1479-1458 BC) was the daughter of Thutmose I and Ahmose.

Hatshepsut’s siblings were Thutmose II, Neferure, Amenmose, Wadjmose.

Hatshepsut’s father, Thutmose I (r. 1503-1493 BC), was the third pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Egypt.

Hatshepsut’s mother, Ahmose, was the daughter of Pharaoh Amenhotep I (c. 1524-1503 BC), and Queen Ahmose-Meritamun.

Hatshepsut’s paternal grandmother was Senseneb.

Hatshepsut’s maternal grandparents were most likely the daughters of Amenhotep I and Ahmose-Meritamun.

Hatshepsut was the mother of Neferure.

Queen Iset’s parents are not known. She was the mother of Thutmose III (r. 1479-1425 BC).

Their husband, Thutmose II (r. 1493-1479 BC), was the son of Thutmose I (r. 1503-1493 BC) and his wife, Mutnofret. He was the half-brother of Hatshepsut.

Cush was a powerful state in the Nile valley around 1700 BC. Conflict between Egypt and Cush culminated in its conquest by Thutmose I. The coronation of Thutmose II triggered Cush to rebel, according to the Aswan Stela of Thutmose II.

After Thutmose II died, he was succeeded by Thutmose III, who was still young.

Hatshepsut acted as regent to Thutmose III. As the years passed, she acted less like a temporary overseer and more like Egypt’s rightful ruler, referring to herself as "King of Upper and Lower Egypt.”

Hatshepsut reigned Egypt from 1478-1458 BC. Her expeditions to Punt, believed to have been located in present-day Eritrea, Somalia, or Sudan, were some of her crowning achievements.
